The hype has been building around 20-year-old Victor Robles, the top prospect in the Nationals minor league system, and the No. 4 overall prospect by MLB Pipeline, for some time now. Today, according to Jeff Passan of Yahoo! Sports, the Nationals are calling up the heralded young outfielder.
Robles started the year playing High-A ball with the Potomac Nationals before being moved up to the Double-A Harrisburg Senators. Robles has a .300 average this season, hitting .289 with the Potomac Nationals, and .324 with the Harrisburg Senators.
Seeing Robles called up doesn’t come as too much of a surprise as rosters expand in September. The Nationals are beginning to get healthy, just in advance of the postseason, but still have a large void in the outfield with Bryce Harper out for the time being. Robles plays centerfield, where Michael A. Taylor has played, and performed well, for the majority of the season.
Robles isn’t going to be an immediate starter upon reaching the big league level, but he will surely get time to play. Robles isn’t likely to stay with the top level club come the start of next season, and he isn’t likely to make the playoff roster either.
This call-up, more than anything, is about giving the young phenom a chance to play in under the brightest lights, give him valuable experience of what it is like to play at the highest level. But even though it won’t be a huge sample size, Robles’ debut for the Nationals will be highly anticipated, and his run with the team will surely be exciting to watch.
