MIDDLETOWN- On Monday at Maryland National Golf Club, the Hawks of Urbana High School took home the inaugural CMC Championship with a final score of 308. Not only did they take home top honors, but a clean sweep of every award handed out – Teagan Stephenson topped the boys with a 1-under 70 and Madison Lewis led the girls with an 82.
Stephenson, who was just recently featured in Sports Illustrated’s Faces in the Crowd, just keeps rolling to amazing feats.
“I’m pleased with the way I’ve been playing recently,” Stephenson said who carded four birdies and a chip-in eagle yesterday. “I had more bogeys than I wanted to today, but I’ll take the score.”
It’s hard to fathom that Stephenson’s 1-under par 70 wasn’t up to personal standards, which speaks volume on just how good the D1-recruit is. Over the summer, he competed in numerous of international events. In the district championship on September 15th, Stephenson cruised to a 6-under par 65 to lift his Hawks team to a district title and ultimately a state tournament appearance.
On the 527-yard par-5 second hole at Maryland National Golf Club he chipped in for eagle and stayed out of trouble for most of the day, taking advantage of the short yardage course.
“My putter saved me today, made a lot of six and seven footers,” Stephenson said.
Stephenson’s teammate, Lewis, not only was crowned individual girls champion, but accomplished an improbable task of every golfer’s dream that few obtain – a hole-in-on. It came at the 117-yard par-3 14th hole.
“When the ball came off my club face, it was flush,” Lewis said who used a pitching wedge from the 117-yard distance. “I knew it was a good shot.”
But little did she know what would happen moments later as the ball plopped onto the green, dribbled a couple times and seemingly found it’s way into the hole.
“I thought I’d have a nice birdie putt,” Lewis said. “Then the ball disappeared.”
That’s when friends, family and spectators erupted as the ball dropped to the bottom of the cup. Lewis knew exactly what happened once she heard the roars.
“Once I heard everyone screaming, that’s how I knew,” she said. “My round overall wasn’t that great. I didn’t play my best, the putter saved me. Had six or seven one putts today.”
Stephenson seemed to be the only golfer out of the 60 on Saturday to tame the wrath of Maryland National that possesses a twisty track, dense rough, slippery quick greens and punishes whoever does not get off the tee well.
Even for one Middletown’s Jake Darr, who is one of the top golfers in the area struggled mightily to get into a rhythm – coming away with a 77, but pitched in for his team’s second place finish with a total score of 314.
“I’m not pleased the score,” Darr said who had problems getting off the tee. “I couldn’t get off the tee. Hole one I hit it OB (out-of-bounds), hole four I hit it OB, hole 18 I hit it OB.”
Though Darr couldn’t solve his tee-to-green game all day, he stood in an relaxed manner, with his hat pointed backwards and in an optimistic state of mind.
“I was lucky to shoot a 77,” he said. “I had five birdies. To come away with a 77 and have five birdies, you’re pretty lucky it wasn’t something worse. The putter saved me.”
Darr started his round bogey, par, par, triple-bogey and found himself 4-over through the first four holes.
“Just couldn’t get into a rythym,” he said.
Darr managed to finish 2-over on the final 14 holes and looks to roll into the state championship October 27th and 28th at a high level.
“I just want to win states,” Darr said. “We have a good team too and we’re in the 1A-2A bracket so the 3A-4A teams we don’t have to worry about. We’re going to give it a run.”
The Linganore Lancers finished third with a compiled score of 323 that was led by Drew Twillman’s 3-over par 74.
“The round went well,” Twillman said. “Didn’t have any putts drop, which was difficult to watch, but it went well.”
Urbana is two for two so far when it comes to 18-hole matches, with wins coming at the district and CMC championship. They hope to complete the final leg of the triple-crown later in the month at the state tournament in College Park.
“Myself and all the seniors on this team just want to go out on top,” Stephenson said. “We want to finish a strong year for Urbana golf. We’ll give it a good run.”
