UPPER MARLBORO- Even though high school basketball is out of season, that doesn’t mean there isn’t hardwood action taking place throughout the area. This past Saturday, the 3rd annual DMVelite 80 showcase brought in over 90 of the DMV’s top high school players to Dr. Henry A. Wise, Jr. High School in Prince George’s County.
Since debuting in 2013, the DMVelite 80 has been on the rise – attracting scouts, college coaches and local and national media abroad to oversee some of the nations top high school basketball prospects showcase their talents.
There was abundant talent across the board and many made names for themselves throughout the day – here is my All-DMVelite 80 Team:
Event layout:
- 94 participants / 12 total teams
- 10 am to 12 pm – warm-ups and training
- 12 pm to 2:30 pm – each team played three games during that timespan (12 minute halves, running clock)
- 3 pm – championship and third place game
MVP: Chyree Walker, 6-4 Wing, Team 8, Bullis Class of 2017
This event had many MVP candidates throughout the day, but there were a couple of statements that separated Chyree Walker from the rest.
Walker put his team on his back from the get-go, scoring 15, 9 and 16 points to carry his unit to a 3-0 record and a coveted championship appearance. In the championship, his team was down 33-30 with under 15 seconds remaining – he brought his team to within one point on a thunderous posterizing fast break slam with 12 seconds left and then topped that with a buzzer-beating dunk to capture the DMVelite 80 championship.
Those two plays were a nutshell of what Walker put on display last Saturday as he dominated the hardwood all day – finishing second overall in points per game with 13.0 and shot an astounding 72 percent from the floor. He also willed his way to the foul line an event high 19 times.
Numbers can’t really back what he did defensively, but he was a nightmare for the opposition – displaying versatility being able to defend the quickest guards on the perimeter and halt the strongest big-men in the post. His length also clogged up passing lanes and converted turnovers into transition points.
