No. 2 Dematha edges out No. 7 Good Counsel

The lights shined bright Friday night at the Prince George’s Sports and Learning Complex with a great rivalry between Dematha and Good Counsel producing an instant classic.

Dematha jumped out to an early 14-0 lead after 2 quick rushing TD’s by Arizona state commit Robbie Robinson. Robinson has never played as running back this season so it was interesting to see him out there with all the weapons Dematha has, especially at running back. Robinson carried the workload in the first half, finishing with 110 yards and 2 TD’s.

Good Counsel would not go down without a fight in this game. Running back Mohamed Ibrahim was able to get into the end zone with almost 6 minutes remaining in the half, followed by a late field goal leaving the Falcons only trailing 14-10 at half.

The energy was high for both teams at half, with the rivalry trophy waiting to be presented to the team that comes out on top.

In the second half, Dematha came out with a different offense. Maryland commit Lorenzo Harrison was not played at all in the first half (Coach’s Decision) however took over RB duties as it seemed a bit too close for comfort for Dematha. This fired up Good Counsel, as they knew they have made things difficult for Dematha to a point where they have to play their starters. Harrison got in the game and had an instant impact who ran for 2 TD’s straight out of the gate.

Dematha has regained control of the game sitting with a comfortable lead at 28-10 while the rain started coming down and the wind started blowing. The Falcons however, continued to fight. With the score 28-17, Lorenzo Harrison takes the handoff at the goal line and a chance to put Good Counsel away for good. He gets stripped of the ball however where Good Counsel would return it to about the opponents 40 yard line. The Falcons were revived with life and a chance to get back into this game. Falcons RB Ibrahim then broke a 45 yard scoring run to put Good Counsel in reach, only trailing 28-23.

The tensions were high as ever at this point and after Dematha had to punt, the Falcons had a chance with less than 2 minutes to win this game. With less than a minute to go, the Falcons have the ball inside the Dematha 15 yard line. Coaches were screaming, the fans were nervous, and the lights shined brighter than ever as the rain subsided. Dematha was able to make a big defensive stand and survives in the last seconds of the game as the players storm the field and celebrate senior night before heading to the playoffs.
