IDEA Charter presses Friends School to defeat

By Ben Spector

SALISBURY- IDEA Charter School from the District of Columbia bumped their record in DMVelite.com Showcase Games up to 2-0 during the 2015 Governor’s Challenge with an authoritative 80-50 win over the Friends School of Baltimore Quakers at the Salisbury School.

It’s been a banner first two days for IDEA senior forward Kierell Green, who after winning the M&T Bank 3-point Shooting Contest for Session #1 went out and put up a double-double against Quakers, recording 11 points and 14 rebounds in the Timberwolves run-away win.

Green had 6 points and 6 rebounds at the break as the Timberwolves were will on their way to taking down the Quakers, leading 40-26 on the strength of an offense that hasn’t slowed down over their first two games.

IDEA Charter has used a press to force their opponents in to trouble and to supplement their high-powered offense, during the tournament and over the course of their season. The Timberwolves have averaged 65.75 points per game which was aided by the season high 93 points they scored against Pocomoke in the first showcase game that they played in at the tournament.

The offense and press defense were on display again today as six Timberwolves were in double digits in points including Stefon Fisher who had 15, Tunde Scrivner who had 14, and Darryl bones who had 13. The Timberwolves were also solid on the defensive front as the press defense was up to its usual tricks forcing 28 turnovers including 18 in the first half.

The Timberwolves strung together many runs throughout the day against the Quakers, who struggled to find offense with their big man Ryan Gomes limited by the stifling defense of IDEA Charter, with the biggest run being the 17-6 run that the Timberwolves went on through most of the 2nd quarter and put the game as close to out-of-reach as the game could be in the 2nd quarter.

The Timberwolves end their tournament at 2-0 while the Quakers will finish out their tournament with a game against the Prominence Academy from North Carolina at 8:15 p.m.

Gerstell Academy-72, The Salisbury School-28

In the matinee, of the 4 games being played at the Salisbury School during Day 2 which was used as a Private/Charter School Showcase, the hometown Dragons from the Salisbury School were easily road by the Gerstell Academy Falcons by a score of 72-28.

For the Falcons, it was pretty much academic from the opening tip-off as after The Salisbury School took a 2-0 lead on the opening bucket of the game the Falcons would then go on a 14-4 run to end the first quarter that was followed by a 24-4 run that encompassed all of the second quarter as Gerstell high-stepped to a win against a Dragons team that played pluckily in the 2nd half even if the game was out of reach by that point.

Leading the way for the Falcons in their only game of the challenge was Luke Gardner and Khyle Washington who scored 17 for the Falcons with Luke’s younger brother Jake following right behind the two with 15.

In almost all the statistical categories the Falcons dominated as they had 37 points off turnovers compared to the Dragons 6, 14 fast break points compared to the Dragons 2, 32 rebounds compared to the Dragons 18, and a 42.1 shooting percentage compared to the Dragons 27.5 shooting percentage.

It wasn’t all bleak for the Dragons as they not only managed to play in a high-exposure tournament which will help the Dragons, a school still trying to explain the value in athletic success, learn as they play tougher opposition.

The future for the Dragons was on display today as senior forward Ryan Cowell recorded 11 points for the Dragons, including the opening bucket – a nifty jump hook from just outside of the pain less than 10 seconds in.

Still, the Falcons were too much for the Dragons to handle as the Gerstell Academy rolled to victory easily.

Indian Creek-59, King’s Christian-49

In what turned out to be the most overall competitive game of the day the Indian Creek Eagles edged the King’s Christian Academy Eagles using a massive second quarter in which Indian Creek outscored King’s Christina 13-2 to take the advantage and never look back.

The big advantage for Indian Creek came on the board as they out-rebounded King’s Christian Academy by a rate of 34-13 which helped them on the offensive front as Indian Creek recorded 16 second chance points while King’s Christian Academy had 0.

Down 8 in the half, King’s Christian battled back as much as they could but Indian Creek stand-out Devin Garrett was too much for King’s Christian to handle as he recorded 12 points and 8 rebounds while other winning efforts from Indian Creek included Malik McKenny who had 13 points and 6 rebounds and Devin Campbell who had 13 points and 8 rebounds.

On the other side of the coin, King’s Christian received a tournament best performance from Andre Boykin who had 24 points and 5 rebounds for the Eagles, with his 24 points being the high scoring mark for King’s Christian so far in the two games that they have played this tournament.

It wasn’t enough for King’s Christian as late foul trouble by their players and the lack of depth that accompanied that forced them to wear out and not be able to stick with Indian Creek for the full four quarters.

Note: In the final game of the day as Mount Carmel took down Prominence Academy 82-77.
