Senior sharp-shooter Matt Considine scored 16 points in a full 32 minutes of work, converting five of his 11 shot shot attempts (three 3-pointers) while hauling in eight rebounds as No. 20 Middletown upsets the reigning 2A champions, No. 6 Oakland Mills 59-58 in stunning fashion.
Evan Joseph also had 16 points of his own (7-for-15 shooting) and Jacob Hamilton registered a double-double with 15 points (6-for-10 shooting) grabbing 14 rebounds. The win launches the Knights into the 2A semifinals against Queen Anne’s next Friday night at 9:00 pm at the Xfinity Center in College Park.
Middletown (20-5) out-shot Oakland Mills, 47-29 percent in a foul ridden, high-intensified soldout atmosphere. The Knights led for the majority of the game due in large part to pressure-packed defense and wise decision making on offense.
Middletown held a 46-37 lead going into the final quarter, but the Scorpions busted the fourth frame open with a 16-6 run that gave them a one-point lead with 2:25 remaining. A 7-0 spurt by the Knights bolstered a 59-53 lead with just under a minute left.
Oakland Mills would make another bid at a late rally, but it was not enough as Middletown prevails to win their first regional crown in 18 years.
