Will Armstrong caught up with his teammate and schoolmate — multi-sport athlete, Joey Salisbury — to discuss his athletic experience at Damascus High as well as future plans.
Armstrong and Salisbury both played on the record breaking Damascus football team this year that went 14-0, contributing to a Class 3A state championship in dominating fashion. Armstrong ran for 351 yards and six touchdowns on 40 carries while Salisbury caught 17 receptions for 195 yards and four touchdowns in a run-heavy offense.
Salisbury also plays basketball and lacrosse, where he averaged six points per game on the hardwood as a forward, and totaled 14 points (two goals and 12 assists) as a defenseman in lacrosse.
Question:Β What was it like playing on not only a state championship team, but one of the best teams in Maryland high school football history?
Answer: It was quite an experience. The culture at Damascus is like no place else. The fans are outstanding. It’s a great group of guys. Everyone comes out and does their job everyday. Everyone cares, and we just win football games because of all the hard work on the team. It’s a full team effort and I will always remember it for the rest of my life.
Q: What’s it like being a multi-sport athlete?
A: It’s very fun because Damascus is a great sports town. We have a lot of great athletes and I get to hangout with a bunch of different group of athletes like the basketball players, football players, and lacrosse players. They’re all different, but they’re all great in their own way. So, the best part is just meeting different people and being in so many different groups of people.
Q:Β Out of football, basketball, and lacrosse, which one is your favorite sport?
A: I would have to say lacrosse because it’s the one that comes the most natural to me. I have a great time playing it. I see the game well, and it’s the one I’ve always loved and have the most experience. I’ve been playing it for such a long time, since like first or second grade.
Q: How about your future plans? Where will you be attending college next year?
A: I have not decided yet. but I do want to play lacrosse in college for a Division-I school, hopefully.
Q: What would you say is the one or couple traits that attribute to your success as being an athlete?
A: I would have to say leadership, work ethic, and the love for all the sports I play. I really care about every person on the field and I love coming out everyday and playing the game. Basketball, lacrosse, football, I love them all. I really appreciate practice everyday and the games especially. I just love it all.
