For eight public school teams in the state of Maryland, this week marks the halfway point in the season. Of the previous six weeks, no slate of games appear more significant than Week 7. Sixteen of the 25 MSA ranked teams are set to play each other Friday night and Saturday afternoon, prepping the stage for major playoff ramifications.

Our Game of the Week features a Prince Georges County and 4A South rivalry between No. 3 Wise and No. 14 Eleanor Roosevelt. The Pumas enter Friday night’s contest with a 14-game winning-streak that dates back to 2014, and are in prime position to capture their third Class 4A title in the last five years. Through six weeks, Wise (6-0) has pummeled their opposition by an average of 40.5 points per game.

The Raiders, on the other hand, have won five straight games by an average of 28.4 points since their season-opening loss to current-No. 23 Riverdale Baptist, 10-7.

Wise will be the favorite once again, but it’s good to remember that the Raiders were the only team to lead the Pumas at halftime in 2015. Wise took last year’s content, 41-6.

On Saturday, MSA will feature a WCAC contest between No. 1 DeMatha (7-0, 2-0 WCAC) and No. 6 Gonzaga (5-1, 2-0 WCAC). The Stags’ lone loss last year came against the Eagles on ESPN.  The two will square off at 2:00 pm on Saturday in the Nation’s Capital, putting their unblemished conference record on the line.

In Montgomery County, No. 19 Northwest (4-2) hosts No. 7 Quince Orchard (5-1) and No. 17 Blair (6-0) hosts No. 11 Sherwood (6-0), both at 6:30 pm. Quince Orchard won this meeting, 28-7, a year ago, but Northwest downed the Cougars in the Class 4A West regional final, 50-40.

Sherwood takes their high-powered offense (47.0 points per game) into Silver Spring on Friday night. According to MaxPreps, which only dates back to 2004, the Warriors have bested the Blazers for 17 straight years. Blair (37.1 points per game) arrays a stout offense looking to end the drought.

In Baltimore, No. 4 McDonogh (5-1) hosts No. 13 St. Frances Academy (5-1) in a highly regarded MIAA match-up. No. 8 Archbishop Spalding (5-1) hosts No. 23 Riverdale Baptist (5-2).

Class 2A runner-up from a year ago, No. 18 Walkersville (6-0), and hard-charging No. 21 Oakdale (6-0) clash in what is billed as Frederick County’s Game of the Year.

Follow along with MSA throughout the weekend for updates on the highly anticipated contests from around the state.
