BALTIMORE — Behind Kendall McGill’s game-high 15 points, Largo rolled to a 49-39 win over No. 17 Woodlawn on Friday night at Morgan State University.
The Lions (4-3) staked an 18-16 halftime lead and outscored the Warriors (8-1) 16-9 in the third quarter.
“Woodlawn is big and physical, and we matched that intensity today,” Largo head coach Lewis Howard said. “It was hustle and heart.”
Largo stretched their lead to 30-23 after a 12-3 run fueled by two Warrick Gordon 3-pointers, McGill’s 3 and layup and Nayshon Hamlett-Kane’s free throw.
The Lions led by as many as 12 in the fourth quarter, but a late push with under 2:30 to go got Woodlawn within six, 43-37. The loss on Friday was the Warriors’ first of the year.
Ardie Dorsey finished with 11 points and Victor Littles added nine, both for Largo.
Woodlawn was paced by Demauri Warren, who had 11 points.
Largo shot 15 of 20 from the free throw line while Woodlawn went 3 of 9.
The Lions will look to gain momentum in the competitive 2A South with the likes of ranked Douglass-PG and Westlake in the fold as the back-nine of the 2016-17 basketball season nears.
“We know we have our work cut out for us trying to get out of the region,” Howard said. “Trying to get guys healthy, get guys to mesh a little bit better. It’s a work progress, trying to peak at the right time.”
