Team Maryland and the BIG 33 executive board announced the 2016 Senior Under Armour ELITE 100 postseason honors on Monday, January 2, highlighting the top senior high school football players in Maryland and the District of Columbia.
The BIG 33 executive board includes members from the Maryland High School Football Coaches Association, the Prince George’s County Coaches Association and the Baltimore Touchdown Club.
Selections were made on recommendations from coaches throughout the Metropolitan area; overall high school resumΓ©, like statistics and all-conference awards; Hudl highlights viewed by the selection committee, college scholarships and verbal commitments, academics and community service.
Players selected are invited to workout at the Baltimore Ravens Under Armour Performance Center for the coaching staff of Team Maryland-BIG 33, where 34 of the 100 invitees will play in the 60th annual Big 33 football classic on Monday, May 29, at 4:00 pm in Hershey Park, Pa., against Team Pennsylvania.
Played since 1957 and billed the βSuper Bowl of high school football,” the first all-star game played against the Mason-Dixon border states wasn’t until 1985. Eight games were then played until Maryland was replaced by Ohio. In October 2012, Pennsylvania announced it had dropped Ohio from the Big 33 game to bring Team Maryland back in the fold. Texas also made an appearance in the mid-1960βs.
Many heralded NFL players have partaken in the Big 33 classic, such as Hall of Fame inductee and Super Bowl champion quarterback, Joe Namath; Hall of Fame inductee and Super Bowl champion running back, Tony Dorsett; Hall of Fame inductee and four-time Super Bowl champion quarterback, Joe Montana; Hall of Fame inductee quarterback, Jim Kelly; Hall of Fame inductee and 1984 MVP quarterback, Dan Marino; Super Bowl champion wide receiver and 2015 Hall of Fame inductee, Marvin Harrison; Hall of Fame inductee running back, Curtis Martin; three-time Super Bowl champion cornerback, Ty Law; Super Bowl champion offensive lineman and 2015 Hall of Fame inductee, Orlando Pace; and Super Bowl champion quarterback, Ben Roethlisberger.
Pennsylvania holds a 10-2 all-time record over Maryland that includes a 26-14 victory last year. The lone two Maryland wins came in 1991 and 2014.
