Every Monday, MSA compiles the top boys’ basketball teams in the state and ranks them 1-25 based on résumé and talent.
DeMatha, which backed its top spot with a dominant win over ranked Eleanor Roosevelt and solid wins versus nationally recognized programs Oak Ridge (Fla.) and Archbishop Wood (Pa.), has a strong hold of No. 1.
Gonzaga (D.C.) is coming off convincing wins over ranked St. Frances and Goretti, and remains at No. 2.
John Carroll is off to a blazing start without Kentucky commit, point guard Immanuel Quickley. The Patriots ripped through its opening week with five wins by 15 or more points, including a 21-point victory over previously third-ranked Mount St. Joseph and a 15-point win over No. 18 McDonogh.
St. Frances, up two spots, and Mount St. Joseph, down two spots, round out the top five. The biggest mover is St. James, going from 16th to 20th. Life without Marvin Price didn’t get off to a smooth start for Patterson, as it lost its opener and falls from No. 12 to No. 20. Bladensburg, previously ranked 21st, drops out of the Top 25, while Springbrook enters. Bullis slides into the Top 10 after a 5-0 start.
Records and statistics are through Sunday.
Note: The only Washington, D.C. teams in the MSA coverage zone are Gonzaga and St. John’s, because the two are minutes from Maryland and compete in the WCAC, one of the top leagues in the nation. Additionally, many Maryland athletes play for the Cadets and Eagles. We don’t cover Virginia teams in the WCAC.
