Editor’s note: MSA is proud to launch a new Q&A series called ‘Inside the Helmet,’ where we’ll be taking you beyond the gridiron and inside the minds of some of the top high school football players around Maryland and D.C.

On Saturday morning, I had the pleasure of speaking with Michael Mbony, senior quarterback for Sherwood High School. Mbony has 13 college offers, including Army, Air Force, Navy and Cornell. Mbony led the Warriors to an undefeated regular season last year, before losing to Mergenthaler Vocational-Technical High School in the 4A North Regional playoff semifinals. Mbony looks ready to lead his team to new heights in 2017.

Question: What’s it like meeting different college coaches? What’s the recruiting process like?

Answer: The recruiting process is a blessing. There’s a lot of opportunities that I’m blessed to have. I’m really thankful and happy for my teammates. They keep pushing me each day and my coaches coach me up every day. You just give it everything you have.

Q: How’d you feel about your scrimmages you had today?

A: About all the scrimmages, I feel like they went well. We’ve got a lot we have to improve on. Overall, we controlled our effort and our passion, which is what we came out here to do. We came to play with some passion and play at 100 percent.

Q: What’s something you feel you need to work on in your game?

A: Definitely need to work on my accuracy. Definitely need to work on being more patient in the pocket. I got speed and I like to scramble around. If things aren’t there, I get out there and scramble, but I just need to have a little more patience and let my wide receivers get open.

Q: You’ve got thirteen college offers right now, which offer stands out the most?

A: Probably the Army right now. They’ve got the triple option, they like to run the quarterback, they give the quarterback passes, and I really like the coaching staff as well.

Q: How do you feel about your team going into the season?

A: I’m confident about my team. Everybody gives everything they have. We were missing
some guys today, but everyone’s going to be back and be ready to go Week 1.

Q: How do you feel about your regular season game against Damascus?

A; I’m fired up. Everybody’s fired up and we’re ready to go.
