Rutgers climbs out of early hole to upset Ohio State in Big Ten tournament

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Rutgers erased an early 10-point deficit to upset Ohio State 66-57 in the first round of the Big Ten men’s basketball tournament Wednesday night at the Verizon Center.

The Scarlet Knights (15-17) were led by Nigel Johnson, who turned in 21 points and three rebounds, charging a bench that produced 32 points. Deshawn Freeman added 10 points and eight rebounds for Rutgers, who shot 37 percent and racked up 22 second chance points.

Ohio State (17-15) was paced by Jae’Sean Tate’s 18 points and six rebounds. 

Rutgers now plays Northwestern on Friday at approximately 9:00 p.m.
